Miners in Chile Continue their Ascensions to Freedom
On Wednesday, October 13, 2010, more than half the gold and copper miners in Copiapo, Chile were finally rescued. After being stuck inside the earth for several months, they finally were released one by one. They all celebrated in different ways: some put their thumbs up, waved Chilean flags, dropped to their knees and prayed, or embraced their family. The first miner that stepped out was Florencio Avalos, who held his son and wife once he got out. Another miner was Mario Gomez, who has been mining since the age of 12. The second miner, Mario Sepulveda, held a chant to Chile when he came out. The youngest miner, Jimmy Sanchez, was now the father of a newborn girl. Edison Pena was ecstatic to come out, and hugged all of his close friends. The last to come out was Luis Alberto Iribarren, who wanted to be the last one to leave the mine. Currently, 21 are rescued, and the rest are expected to come out safely.
